Alverno Sweeps Northland For Split On Day

MILWAUKEE -- After opening the day with a 3-1 setback to Illinois Institute of Technology, host Alverno College swept Northland College in three sets to close out a home triangular with a split.

Alverno took the opening set from Illinois Tech, 25-17, where the hosts trailed after the first point, but then took a 2-1 lead and didn't fall behind the rest of the set. The Inferno hit its match-best .300, committing just two attack errors in the opening set, while the Scarlet Hawks had 11 miscues for a negative hitting percentage.

The tables turned in the second and third sets as Alverno managed just eight kills in the pair, while Illinois Tech tallied 23 for identical wins of 25-20 in the second and third.

The Inferno got the attack going again in the fourth with 14 kills and just four errors on 41 attacks, but the Scarlet Hawks didn't let up for a match-high 19 kills and a .333 attack percentage, and narrowly won the match-clinching set 26-24.

Emily Ortner led the Inferno with a team-best 14 kills, tying the Scarlet Hawks' Adriane Walther and Taylor Duman for match-high honors. Duman added six service aces to lead all, as the visitors were had 16 perfect strikes.

Shea Manley had a match-best 39 assists for the Scarlet Hawks, while Meranda Masse and Chelsey Powless had 13 and 12 for Alverno.

Dakota Powless led the Inferno defense with a match-best 13 digs, while Ortner added 12 for a double-double, and Alyssa Mazur had 10. Jessica Wewers had six total blocks in the match, including two solo stops, to aid the Inferno defense.

Wewers would switch her focus to the offensive attack versus Northland, as she led all players with 13 kills. The rookie added three block assists on the defensive side of the net as well to go along with a pair of aces as the Inferno downed the LumberJills 25-11, 25-22, 25-19.

Ortner recorded her second double-double of the night with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Dakota Powless and Danielle Schilawski had 14 and 13 digs to help out the Inferno defense. Alison Blackford led the LumberJills with 17 digs.

Chelsey Powless led all with 20 assists while Masse chipped in 12 to go along with a pair of blocks.

Illinois Tech (3-4) defeated Northland (1-5) in three sets in the other match of the triangular.

Alverno (2-5) hosts its second triangular in as many days tomorrow versus Beloit College and Mount Mary University. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
