CHICAGO -- Host Illinois Institute of Technology took down visiting Alverno College in a three-set sweep Wednesday night in Keating Sports Center.
The Inferno (1-4) trailed the entire opener, which it lost 25-17, and finally took a lead on the first point in the second set. With the set tied up 8-8, the host Scarlet Hawks (1-0) connected for eight-straight points and cruised to a 25-14 second-set victory.
The third and final frame saw a lead that went back and forth, but again the Scarlet Hawks came out on top, 25-22, for the sweep.
Alverno tallied just 12 kills on the night and committed 19 attack errors for a season-low -.082 attack percentage, while Illinois Tech hit .170 on 33 kills in its season opener.
Cali Trepp hit an impressive .235 with a team-high seven kills to lead the Inferno, while Irena Grauzinis led the Scarlet Hawks with 10.
Alverno will get a chance to redeem the defeat as it hosts Illinois Tech on Friday, September 12 in Reiman Gymnasium, the team's next scheduled match.
