Inferno Downs Host Bucs, Falls To Redhawks On Opening Day

BELOIT, Wis. -- Alverno College earned a split on opening day of the 2014 season, defeating host Beloit College 3-0 and falling to Ripon College 3-0 in the Buc Blast Tournament Friday in Flood Arena.

The Inferno (1-1) earned a contested 25-20 opening-set victory over the Bucs (0-1), before cruising to the match victory with second and third-set scores of 25-12 and 25-19 to open the season with a win.

Emily Ortner led the offensive attack with a match-high 17 kills on 26 attempts and three service aces, while the Inferno defense was led by Dakota Powless with nine digs and Melissa Weyand with three blocks. Meranda Masse directed the attack with 31 assists.

In the nightcap versus the Redhawks (2-0), the Inferno dropped the match 25-17, 25-17, 25-15.

Cali Trepp led the Inferno with 10 kills on 17 attempts, directed by Skye Kapinus who had a team-high 24 assists. Trepp, who also served up a pair of aces, anchored the defense with three blocks.

The Inferno continues play at the Buc Blast with matches against the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Rockford University tomorrow at 12 and 4 p.m.
