MEQUON, Wis. -- Alverno College earned a split at a triangular hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday evening in Buuck Fieldhouse, as it dropped the first match to the host Falcons and defeated Finlandia University in the second.
The Falcons (11-15, 5-4 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) took the opener in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18 and 25-8, as the hosts tallied 41 kills and eight blocks to the Inferno's 25 and two.
Alverno took the lead in the first set, 12-11 on a Genevieve Bauman ace and a Cali Trepp kill extended the lead to two, but the Falcons took four of the next five points and remained in front for the remainder of the match.
The Inferno (10-11, 1-7 NACC) bounced back its fifth-straight loss to take down the Lions (5-21) in four sets--25-16, 24-26, 25-13 and 25-18--in the team's final nonconference match of the year.
Alverno connected for 49 kills on a .162 attack percentage in the win, as Ortner led all attackers with 18 kills. Trepp added 11 and Mariah Arterberry added eight, while Schilawski added a pair of service aces and Meranda Masse dished out 38 assists.
Defensively Mary Green added a pair of solo blocks, Arterberry added three more (one solo) and Danielle Rosenthal added two. Ortner had a match-high 19 digs, while Schilawski and Trepp dug out 15 and 14.
Next action for the Inferno takes place tomorrow at 2 p.m. in a home match versus Wisconsin Lutheran College.
