MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College broke the school wins record with its eighth victory of the season in a 3-0 sweep of visiting Silver Lake College Thursday night in Reiman Gymnasium.
The Inferno (8-6) tied the school record on Sept. 14, but lost its last two matches before tonight's nonconference victory over the Lakers (2-4).
"I'm really proud of this team," said first-year Alverno Head Coach Jimmy Muñoz. "They've done a lot, and I've asked them to do a lot. I see good things in the future for this program."
Alverno snapped its 78-match conference loss streak just over two weeks ago, won school-record seven-straight matches, and now has a new wins mark with 10 matches remaining in the season.
The Inferno led 17-10 in the first set, but allowed the Lakers to crawl back, 23-21, before Cali Trepp attacked for one of her match-high 16 kills (.314 attack percentage) for the side out, and Mary Green and Meranda Masse sealed the 25-21 set win with the block.
The second set was a similar pace as a 17-11 lead was trimmed to 22-20, before Trepp got the side out on a kill and the Lakers ended it with a pair of unforced errors, 25-20.
Alverno finally got in rhythm and rolled to a 25-12 third-set win as Mariah Arterberry denied Lakers' final attack for her third block of the match.
Emily Ortner was limited to just two sets, but managed 10 kills at a .261 clip, while Arterberry added eight on Masse's 30 assists. Rookie libero Danielle Schilawski served up five aces in the historic win.
Danielle Rosenthal recorded a match-best 12 digs to lead the Inferno defense, and Trepp added nine.
Alverno has tomorrow off before it heads crosstown to face host Mount Mary University for the second time this season Saturday at 5 p.m. The Inferno swept the Blue Angels 3-0 at the Beloit College triangular three weeks ago.
