BELOIT, Wis. -- First-year Alverno College Head Coach Jimmy Muñoz notched his first victories at the helm of the Inferno volleyball program with a pair of 3-0 wins at a triangular hosted by Beloit College this afternoon.
Alverno (2-4) opened the day with a sweep of Mount Mary University (0-3) and then capped it off with a sweep of the host Buccaneers (3-3) in the day's final match. Beloit topped Mount Mary 3-0 in the morning match of the triangular.
"I'm pretty excited right now," Muñoz said. "I'm very proud of my team for working so hard every day in the gym. They trust the system, the coaching staff and trust each other on the team. The hard work definitely paid off today."
The Inferno offense posted its highest attack percentage of the season, .235, in the win over the Blue Angels, and then bettered it with a .271 mark in the win over the Bucs. Alverno committed a season-low 12 errors in the first match, and connected for a season-best 39 kills in the second.
Alverno breezed to first and second-set victories versus the Blue Angels, 25-12 and 25-10, and trailed just once in the entire match. Down 2-0 in the third set, the Inferno rallied to take 9-2 lead as five different Inferno players scored during the go-ahead run, and closed out the match with a 25-9 final-set decision.
Cali Trepp led the attack with 10 kills on 16 attempts for a .562 percentage, Mariah Arterberry had six and Meranda Masse added five. Emily Ortner served up seven aces, Masse had four and a match-high 21 assists.
Defensively, Danielle Schilawski and Trepp led the victors with 14 and 12 digs.
Against the Bucs the Inferno trailed just once in each of the first two sets, 1-0 in the 25-13 opening-set, and 2-0 in the 25-13 second set. The score was back-and-forth in the 25-18 final frame, before 10-consecutive Alverno points broke a 10-10 tie.
Ortner led the offensive charge and broke a school record with 17 kills in a three-set match -- just one off her career-high which came in a four-setter last season. Katherine Lemke ('07) set the former record of 16 in 2007 versus Lawrence University.
Trepp had another outstanding attack with 11 kills, and the rookie Masse posted season and career-highs with 29 assists.
Ortner led the Inferno defense with 18 digs, while Schilawski added 12 and Trepp 11.
Alverno completes its season-opening seven-match road swing with its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener at Rockford College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
