RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Alverno College volleyball team ended the Northern Athletics Conference portion of its schedule with a 3-0 loss to host Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday night in Geiseman Gymnasium.
The loss kept the Inferno (3-22, 0-12 NAC) winless in league play for the 2012 season, while the Cougars improved to 3-9 in conference and 5-17 overall.
Alverno trailed 19-13 in the opening set before a late rally cut the lead to just two, 22-20, after back-to-back errors by the host Cougars. CUC responded with two-straight scores, followed by two from Alverno, but a service error ended the set in favor of the Cougars, 25-22.
The Cougars then took a 2-0 match lead with an easy 25-14 second set victory.
In the third frame, the Inferno garnered its first lead of the match on an Emma Ortner kill, and extended its lead to 8-5 on a Cali Trepp kill. However, the Cougars scored three straight and evened the match at 8-8, prior to a back-and-forth battle that evened the match again at 15-15.
A pair of kills put the Cougars in front and they maintained their lead the rest of the way for a 25-21 decision, which ended the match in three.
Ortner led the Inferno offense with 11 kills and Trepp added seven, while Reagan Owen had a team-high 20 assists. Ortner tied CUC's Sarah James for a match-high nine digs defensively.
The teams combined for 20 service errors in the match, as CUC had 11, but the Cougars also had eight aces to the Inferno's two.
Alverno returns to play at the Washington University Halloween Invite in St. Louis, this weekend.
