FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The host Sabres of Marian University used a .354 attack percentage to defeat the visiting Alverno College Inferno, 3-0, tonight in Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Inferno (3-15, 0-6 Northern Athletics Conference) committed 22 attack errors on the night for just a .091 percentage in its fifth-straight loss.
A 10-10 first-set tie was broken on an Inferno attack error, and the home team quickly increased its lead to 20-13 and sailed to an eventual 25-17 set win for the 1-0 match lead.
The second set was all Sabres (12-9, 4-2 NAC) as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead and finished the frame with a 25-12 advantage for the 2-0 lead.
In the third the Inferno rallied from a 15-7 deficit to pull within two, 18-16, on a kill by Emma Ortner, but the Sabres withstood the comeback effort for a 25-20 final.
Ortner led the Inferno's offensive attack with a match-high 12 kills on 26 attempts for a .231 attack percentage, and had a match-best nine digs on the defensive side of the net.
Alverno returns to the court on Friday as it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin in its homecoming match on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
