MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College won the opening set against Milwaukee School of Engineering, but the host Raiders won the final three sets for the 3-1 match victory tonight in the Kern Center.
The Inferno (3-13, 0-4 Northern Athletics Conference) jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first set before the Raiders (3-11, 1-3 NAC) battled back to tie it up, 18-18. Yet Alverno rattled off five-straight points and won the set 25-19.
The visitors jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but the hosts clawed their way back to a 14-14 tie and finally took a lead, which they extended to 20-15. Alverno pulled to within one, 21-20, but four straight points ended the set, 25-20, and evened the match at one apiece.
In the third and fourth sets, MSOE trailed just once -- 1-0 in the third set -- and cruised to 25-19 and 25-16 wins for the 3-1 match victory.
The teams were even with 44 kills apiece, but the Inferno committed 14 more attack errors for 37 total, which proved to be the difference.
Three Inferno players recorded double-doubles as Cali Trepp had a team-high 18 kills to go with 12 digs, Emma Ortner had 14 kills and a team-best 18 digs, and Reagan Owen added 10 digs and a match-high 37 assists.
Trepp's 18 kills broke the Alverno single-four-set-match record by one. She also held the previous record of 17, which she set last year.
Alverno gets right back to action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Rockford College at 2 p.m.
