CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Alverno College concluded play at the Pacific Coast Classic volleyball tournament hosted by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges with a pair of losses on Saturday.
The Inferno (1-3) lost the day's opening match to host Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-11) and then the nightcap to Whittier College 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-14).
The host Sagehens (3-1) recorded 11 kills, error free, in the opening set for the early 1-0 lead. The hosts committed only six errors the entire match, all of which came in the second set.
Meanwhile, the Inferno committed 25 attack errors to only 22 kills in the match. Emma Ortner (Tigerton, Wis.) led the team with seven kills while Cali Trepp (Iron Mountain, Mich./Niagara) added six. Defensively Ortner had a match-high nine digs.
Against the Poets (2-2), the Inferno improved their attack with 23 kills and 19 errors, but Whittier tallied 43 kills for a 35-percent accuracy in the three-set match.
Trepp had a match-high 13 digs to lead the defense, while Ortner led the offensive attack with seven kills.
Alverno competes in another tournament next weekend at North Park University in Chicago. The Inferno faces the host Vikings on Friday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. to begin play.
