DECORAH, Iowa -- Alverno lost its final two matches in the Luther College Tournament today to Waldorf, 3-1, and to the host Norse, 3-0. The Inferno finish the five-team-round-robin tournament with a 1-3 record, good for fourth place, while Luther won their tournament with a 4-0 record.
Rookie setter Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) was named to the all-tournament team to represent the Inferno (3-14 overall).
In today's opening loss to Waldorf, Alverno dropped the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-8, before taking the third 25-23. But the Warriors (5-21) won the match by winning the final set 25-16.
Linda Vang (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) led Alverno with 10 kills on offense, while on defense Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) set a school record with 34 digs in the match. The former Alverno record was set on October 2, 2003, by Amanda Kubusek who had 29. Metzger recorded a double-double with 12 assists and 12 digs.
In the loss (25-19, 25-21, 25-14) to Luther (13-6), Metzger recorded her second double-double of the day with 10 assists and 10 digs, while Owen again led the defense with 12 digs.
Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) led the Inferno's offensive attack with six kills.
Alverno travels to Dominican on Tuesday for a Northern Athletics Conference match at 7 p.m.
