MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College defeated Northland College 3-2, before falling to Mt. Mary College 3-1 for a third-place finish in the 2011 Alverno Classic.
The Inferno finished the weekend tournament with a 2-2 record, behind runner-up Mt. Mary (3-1) and tournament champion UW-Superior (4-0). Presentation took fourth place with a 1-3 record, and Northland was fifth at 0-4.
Alverno opened the day with a 2-0 lead on Northland, before allowing the LumberJills to tie up the match, 2-2. But the Inferno took a commanding 13-1 lead in the final set and won it 15-4 for the match victory.
Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) had a match-high 37 assists to lead the Inferno to a new single-match team record of 50 assists. Her leading attacker was Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) who connected on 15 kills for a .306 attack percentage. Rookies Cali Trepp (Iron Mountain, Mich./Niagara) and Erik Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) added 12 and eight kills.
Defensively the Inferno dug 90 opponent attacks and had six team blocks. Mai Kaw Xiong (Milwaukee/Riverside) led the defense with 23 digs, while Trepp and Owen added 20 and 16.
In the nightcap the Inferno put up solid numbers, but the visiting Blue Angels got the best of the tournament hosts in the third and fourth sets for the 3-1 victory.
Trepp and Stuckey both tallied double-digit kills, as Trepp had a match-high 17 and Stuckey added 13, while Owen led the team with 33 assists.
Defensively Ashley Graham (Cudahy, Wis.) had 18 digs, and Stuckey added 14 for her first double-double of the season.
The Inferno's Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) was named to the all-tournament team after her stellar performance on Saturday, but was sidelined by injury for today's matches. Additionally, Owen was named the defensive specialist of the tournament.
Alverno, off to the team's best start (2-2) in the 12-year history of the program, continues with tournament place next week at St. Catherine University's tournament in St. Paul, Minn.
