MILWAUKEE – The Alverno tennis team recognized the efforts of senior Michelle Alexander on Saturday afternoon as the Inferno played host to its final fall matches of the 2019 fall season. Alverno hosted both Dominican and Concordia Chicago, and fell by identical 6-3 scores.
Alexander was recognized prior to the opener against Dominican on Saturday morning, as the Inferno welcomed the Stars to the Lake Park Tennis Courts in Milwaukee. A brief on-court ceremony was conducted to recognize Alexander's career efforts and contributions to the Alverno tennis team and the athletics department as a whole.
Following her four-year career with the Inferno, Alexander will finish her time in Milwaukee third on the all-time singles and third on the all-time doubles wins list in the program's 11-year history. Alexander added two more singles wins to her career and two more doubles win sto her ledger on Saturday, before heading into the final match of the fall next Saturday.
Alverno vs. Dominican
Following the ceremony before the match, doubles play opened in brisk autumn-like weather on Saturday morning with Alexander and freshman partner Kalei Hanna picking up an 8-6 victory over their counterparts from Dominican.
In the other pair of doubles matchups, freshmen Monse Sanchez-Gutierrez and Sierra Hunstable fell in the second doubles by an 8-1 score, while the freshman pairing of Merub Irfan and Anna Nikolich fell just short in an 8-6 decision.
Play shifted to singles action and Alexander powered her way to a straight-sets win with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over the top Stars' singles player. Hanna also picked up a singles win for the Inferno, as she picked up the first set win 7-6 (7-5), before notching a second-set win by a 7-6 (9-7) margin.
Hunstable picked up wins in the fourth singles match as she fell 6-2, 6-3, while Sanchez-Gutierrez played a strong first set before dropping the match 7-5, 6-0. Nikolich secured three game wins in the sixth singles with a 6-1, 6-2 loss, while Irfan faced a tough competitor and went down 6-0, 6-0.
Alverno vs. Concordia Chicago
The rain came through the Milwaukee area and the Inferno were forced to take their match with the Cougars indoors at the Paley Tennis Center in Milwaukee.
Once again the doubles play opened with a win by Alexander and Hanna by an 8-6 margin, while Sanchez-Gutierrez and Nikolich competed in the second doubles and Irfan and Hunstable met in the third doubles with both falling by 8-2 scores.
During the individual portion of the evening, Alexander capped off her 4-0 day with a singles win in straight sets; 6-1, 6-0. While also picking up a singles win for the Inferno was Irfan in the third doubles with a sound 6-1 win in the first before holding off her opponent 6-5 in the second set.
Hanna dropped her singles bout 6-0, 6-2, while Hunstable fell by a 6-0, 6-4 score. In the fifth singles it was Sanchez-Gutierrez unable to come away with a win as she fell 6-0, 6-1; while Nikolich dropped her singles decision in straight sets; 6-0, 6-0.
Alverno will close out the schedule with a trip to Illinois Tech on Saturday, when the Inferno will play at the XS Tennis Center at 10 a.m. on October 12 to close out conference play.
