MILWAUKEE – The Alverno tennis team opened its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday afternoon as the Inferno hosted the Lakeland Muskies on the McKinley Park Tennis Courts on Milwaukee's east side, but fell by a 7-2 score.
The cool lake breeze kept the temperatures low throughout the match on the overcast afternoon as the Inferno and Muskies met.
Doubles competition opened up with seniors Michelle Alexander and Jessie West winning a lengthy match that saw the Inferno pairing emerge with a victorious 8-6 score behind some strong communication and court awareness between the pair.
In the additional doubles matches, freshmen Kalei Hanna and Merub Irfan were able to win one game, but fell by an 8-1 score. The other freshmen pairing of Sierra Hunstable and Monse Sanchez-Gutierrez dropped an 8-0 decision in the third doubles match.
As play progressed to singles competition, it was West to pick up the team's lone win in individual competition as she used a strong power game to take down her competition 6-0, 6-2.
Alexander's match in singles play was an enduring bout between two of the top players in the conference but it was ultimately Lakeland's top singles competitor to seal the victory 6-4, 6-3.
Hunstable showed drive in the second set after dropping the opener 6-1. She followed her first set up with a 6-3 loss in the second.
Hanna picked up a win in game one but fell 6-1, 6-0; while Irfan dropped a 6-0 first set before taking a game in the second set, 6-1. Sanchez-Gutierrez rounded out singles play with a loss in the fifth singles pairing, 6-0, 6-1.
Alverno (0-2, 0-1 NACC) will next travel to UW-Whitewater, and will compete head-to-head in a dual match with UW-River Falls on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
