RACINE, Wis. – On Saturday, the Alverno tennis team closed out its 2018 season with a pair of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchups against Aurora and Illinois Tech at Life Sport Athletic Club.
In the early session the Inferno battled in a close matchup with Aurora, before ultimately falling by a 6-3 score. Later in the day Alverno took on one of the top teams in the conference and was unable to score a win during the 9-0 loss.
Between matches the Alverno tennis team and athletics department recognized its two seniors, playing in their final collegiate tennis matches of their careers. Seniors Lia Hutchins and Dani Hood were noted for their efforts and dedication to the team as they plan to graduate in the near future.
Alverno vs. Aurora
The day started off with doubles competition with Hood and junior Michelle Alexander teaming up for the #1 singles. The lengthy match was a close battle, which ultimately ended up in favor of Aurora at 8-6.
Hutchins and freshman Aaliyah McAfee paired up in the second doubles and the duo collected Alverno's first win of the day with an 8-3 victory. The third doubles saw freshman Ashley Boston team up with Jackie Velasco-Soberanis, but they fell in an 8-2 decision as Alverno went into single competition trailing 2-1.
Singles play got underway with the top four matches as Alexander won a tough battle 6-2, 6-2 in the top singles. Hood also scored a win in the third singles 6-1, 6-0 as Alverno regained the lead. McAfee fell in her singles match 6-1, 6-0 to even the score back up at three apiece.
Hutchins' singles match was a tough battle as Alverno's senior squared off against tough competition and ultimately fell in two sets 6-3, 6-4. Boston picked up two wins in her opening set, but fell 6-2 in the opener before dropping a 6-0 score in the second set. Velasco-Soberanis hung with her opponent in the opening set and fell by a 6-3 count, while dropping the second set, 6-1 as Aurora emerged victorious with the 6-3 team score victory.
Alverno vs. Illinois Tech
Following the senior day festivities, Alverno took on Illinois Tech for the first time as conference opponents. The Scarlet Hawks were able to pull off the sweep as Illinois Tech picked up the 9-0 team score victory.
Doubles play once again kicked off the afternoon session with Alexander and Hood in the first doubles, as well as Hutchins and McAfee in the second doubles fell by identical 8-1 scores. Boston and Velasco-Soberanis fell in their doubles match by an 8-2 margin.
In singles play the Scarlet Hawks controlled much of the action as Alexander dropped the opener 6-0, 6-0; while Hutchins fell in the second singles 6-1, 6-0. Hood scored three wins in the opening set, but fell 6-3, 6-0.
McAfee and Boston dropped their singles matches in straight decisions; 6-0, 6-0. While Velasco-Soberanis picked up single game wins in both of her sets as she was unable to get past her 6-1, 6-1 scores.
