Tennis Opens October with Pair of Victories at Concordia Chicago & Dominican

CHICAGO – The Alverno tennis team kicked off the month of October with a pair of wins in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action. The Inferno battled Concordia Chicago to a 5-4 victory in the opener, before notching an 8-1 win over Dominican in the second match of the day.

Going 2-0 on the day in singles competition were junior Michelle Alexander in the top singles, as did seniors Lia Hutchins in the second singles and classmate Dani Hood in the third singles. Freshmen Aaliyah McAfee and Jackie Velasco-Soberanis also picked up singles victories against Dominican.

In doubles competition, Alexander and Hood teamed up in the first singles and scored a pair of victories on the day while Hutchins and McAfee scored wins in both of their doubles matchups against both the Cougars and the Stars.

The two wins propel the Inferno into eighth place in the NACC standings. Alverno has two conference regular season matches remaining against Aurora and Illinois Tech in Racine this upcoming weekend, and will look to finish the season on a high note against the Spartans and Scarlet Hawks.

Alverno vs. Concordia Chicago

Alverno got off to a quick start with its matchup against the Cougars as Alexander and Hood scored an 8-4 victory in the first doubles competition to put the Inferno up 1-0 in the team score.

The second doubles featured Hutchins and McAfee, and in the closest match of the day, the win for the Inferno proved to be the deciding decision as Alverno scored the 9-7 victory in the second doubles.

Velasco-Soberanis teamed up with freshman Ashley Boston in the third doubles, but the duo fell by an 8-1 score.

As play shifted to singles action Alexander coasted to a straight-set win posting scores of 6-0, 6-0. Hutchins won her first set by a 6-1 margin, before collecting a 6-3 win in the second set. Hood also posted a victory in the third singles as she blanked her opponent in the opening set, 6-0, before scoring a 6-3 win to give Alverno its fifth team point of the match.

In the remaining three singles matches, McAfee fell by identical 6-1 scores in her two sets, while Velasco-Soberanis fell in the opener 6-2, before falling 6-0 in the second set. Boston forced a third set as she forced the third with a 6-4 second set win, but ultimately dropped the third set 6-1 to fall two sets to one. 

Alverno vs. Dominican

The Inferno dominated most of the match against the Stars of Dominican, including wins in all three doubles matches.

Alexander and Hood in the top doubles scored an 8-1 win, while Hutchins and McAfee also won the second doubles by the same score. In the third doubles, Boston teamed up again with Velasco-Soberanis and the newly-formed duo posted an 8-3 victory to give Alverno a sweep in doubles action.

In the top singles Alexander faced the top Stars' entry and scored a straight-set sweep with scored of 6-2, 6-1. Hutchins and Hood did not drop a game in the second and third singles, respectively, sweeping their opponents by identical 6-0, 6-0 victories.

In the fourth singles, McAfee connected on her win by scores of 6-2, 6-4; while Velasco-Soberanis coasted in the sixth singles as she picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory. In the fifth singles Boston pushed her opponent hard in the opening set before falling 6-4, and the followed up a 6-2 loss in the second set as Dominican was able to escape with just the one victory on the afternoon.
