Tennis Competes in Busy Weekend of Action

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno tennis team took part in four matches this weekend including a pair in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play at home on Saturday.

The Inferno took on Marian and Concordia Wisconsin at the McKinley Park Tennis Courts on Saturday and fell by identical scores of 9-0. The following day Alverno visited Beloit for a non-conference tilt with the host Buccaneers as well as the Lake Forest Foresters and were also unable to score a win in either match, falling to Beloit 7-2 and Lake Forest 9-0.

Alverno vs. Marian

In the opener on Saturday against Marian, the day began with a strong showing in doubles competition as senior Dani Hood and junior Michelle Alexander pushed Marian's top doubles flight to a 9-7 score. Senior Lia Hutchins and freshman Aaliyah McAfee fell by an 8-3 margin in the second doubles.

In singles action Alexander took one game in the opening set and two more in the second falling 6-1, 6-2. Hutchins fell 6-2, 7-5 in the second set, while Hood scored set three game wins with one in the first set and two in the second; 6-1, 6-2.

McAfee was unable to score as she fell, 6-0, 6-0 while freshman Ashley Boston scored one win in the opening set before dropping the second set 6-0.

Alverno vs. Concordia Wisconsin

Against Concordia Wisconsin later in the day both scores in the doubles were identical as Hood and Alexander in the first doubles along with Hutchins and McAfee in the second doubles both fell by 8-2 margins.

As play transitioned into singles action Alexander dropped her decision 6-1, 6-1 in the first singles. During the second singles Hutchins was able to grab three wins but also fell, 6-2, 6-1. Hood went down in the first set 6-0, before fighting back for two game wins in the second set.

Boston in the fifth singles and McAfee in the fourth went down in straight sets to close out the action on Saturday afternoon.

Alverno vs. Beloit

Playing with a different scoring format in singles competition at Beloit, the Inferno were able to register a pair of wins in a 9-2 loss during the matchup with the Buccaneers.

The doubles pairings of Alexander and Hood in the first doubles notched the first win of the day for the Inferno by the score of 8-3. The second doubles pairings of Hutchins and McAfee dropped an 8-3 decision.

Singles action saw Alexander record an 8-3 win in the top pairing while Hutchins pushed the Beloit second singles competitor to the brink as she fell by the score of 8-6. Hood fell by an 8-4 score, while McAfee dropped her decision 8-3 in the fourth singles. The match came to a close in the fifth singles with Boston unable to record a game win, falling 8-0.

Alverno vs. Lake Forest

Closing out a busy weekend of competition, Alverno took on Lake Forest at Beloit as well and fell by a 9-0 team score.

Alexander and Hood dropped an 8-1 decision in the first doubles; while Alverno changed things up and teamed Boston up with Hutchins in the second doubles that resulted in an 8-0 loss.

Four of Alverno's five singles matches were straight sets losses aside from McAfee, who notched one win in an 8-1 loss in the fourth singles pairing.

Alverno (0-11, 0-5 NACC) will head into October and four more conference matches to close out the slate. The team will be on the road this Saturday to take on Concordia Chicago at 10 am; followed by a trip to Dominican at 2 p.m.
