Non-Conference Competition at Lawrence Soured by Pointers, Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. – The Alverno tennis team returned to competition on Saturday and took on non-conference UW-Stevens Point and Lawrence at Lawrence University. The Inferno fell to the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point by a 6-3 score, before falling to the host Vikings by a 7-2 margin.

In doubles action on the day senior Dani Hood and junior Michelle Alexander registered a win over UW-Stevens Point for Alverno's first doubles win of the season, 8-5.

The other four combined wins came in the form of singles competition as senior Lia Hutchins and Hood picked up victories against UW-Stevens Point, while Hutchins and Alexander secured singles wins against Lawrence.

Alverno vs. UW-Stevens Point

Against the Pointers, Alverno was able to post its best score of the season with three wins. Hood and Alexander took first doubles by an 8-5 score. In the second doubles Hutchins and freshman Aaliyah McAfee fell by an 8-1 margin.

In the top singles pairing Alexander fell 7-5, 6-3 before Hutchins secured a win 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 to even the score at two matches apiece. Hood pushed the Inferno up 3-2 with a 7-6, 7-5 win in the third singles. McAfee fell in straight sets as did freshman Ashley Boston; 6-1, 6-0.

Alverno vs. Lawrence

The Inferno followed its match with the Pointers with another non-conference match with host Lawrence. Alverno fell in first doubles by a close 8-6 score as Hood and Alexander pushed their hosts to the brink. Hutchins and McAfee also battle in the second doubles, falling by an 8-5 difference.

Alverno did pull out victories in the top two singles pairings as Alexander needed a third set tiebreak to earn the victory 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4). Hutchins won in a two-set decision with identical 6-3 scores.

Hood fell in the third singles, 6-1, 6-3; while McAfee won a game in the second set as she dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Boston fought tough in her second set but was unable to come out on top by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

Alverno (0-7, 0-3 NACC) will return to conference competition on Tuesday afternoon, when the Inferno host their first match of the season against Wisconsin Lutheran. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m., at the McKinley Park Tennis Courts.
