KOHLER, Wis. – The Alverno tennis team opened up Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday afternoon and fell to the Lakeland Muskies by an 8-1 score at Sports Core.
The lone Inferno win came in the second singles as senior Lia Hutchins secured a pair of set victories, both of which came in tiebreaks 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4). The win for Hutchins was her first of the season in singles competition on the young season.
Meanwhile in other singles matchups junior Michelle Alexander fell in two sets in the top singles pairing, 6-0, 6-3. Junior Dani Hood along with freshmen Aaliyah McAfee and Ashley Boston all dropped their singles matches in straight sets. Hood won two games in her opening set before picking up one game win in the second set; McAfee picked up three game wins in the opening set but was unable to pick up a game in the second set.
In doubles competition Hood and Hutchins teamed up in the top doubles pairing and fell by an 8-1 margin. Alexander and McAfee joined forces in the second pairing and ultimately fell, but not before picking up four wins as they dropped the decision 8-4.
Alverno (0-3, 0-1 NACC) will resume conference play on Saturday, September 15 as the team kicks off a long day of tennis at 9:30 a.m. at Edgewood; the team will return to Milwaukee to visit MSOE at approximately 2 p.m.
Lakeland (1-1, 1-0 NACC) will be at home this weekend for a conference tri-match with Concordia Chicago at 10 a.m., followed by Dominican at 2 p.m.
