Tennis Swept in Season Opening Tri-Meet with North Park and Wisconsin Lutheran

CHICAGO – The Alverno tennis team got its season started on Saturday with a trip to North Park to take on the host Vikings while also competing against the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors. Against the Vikings, the Inferno fell by a score of 9-0, before taking a pair of matches against the Warriors in a 7-2 loss.

The pair of Alverno wins came in singles competition as junior Michelle Alexander won a three-set marathon, while classmate Dani Hood picked up a straight sets win against the Warriors, 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Lia Hutchins hung close in the opening set of her singles matchup against Wisconsin Lutheran falling by a 6-4 score before dropping the second set and the match 6-1. Freshmen Aaliyah McAfee was unable to get a game in her single matchup, while classmate Ashley Boston trailed 5-0 before retiring.

In doubles competition Hood and Hutchins teamed up and took three games from the top pair of the Warriors, but fell by an 8-3 margin. The other doubles pair of Alexander and McAfee picked up one win before falling 8-1 in the second doubles pairing.

Earlier in the day the Inferno took on host North Park to kick off the season and dropped the decision by a 9-0 final.

In singles competition Alexander forced the Vikings' top entry to win by a 7-5 score in the opening set, but dropped the second set 6-0. Hutchins fell in straight sets in her singles match 6-4, 6-2, while Hood also dropped both sets 6-2, 6-3. In her collegiate debut, McAfee fell 6-0, 6-1, while Boston dropped her singles decision by identical 6-0 marks.

During the doubles portion of the match Hood and Hutchins fell 8-1, as did Alexander and McAfee in the second doubles match.

Alverno (0-2) will kick off Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference competition on Tuesday, when the Inferno travels to Lakeland for a 4 p.m. start in Oostburg, Wisconsin at Sports Core.
