MILWAUKEE -- For the second straight year, Alverno College has advanced to the semifinal round of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.
The host and third-seeded Inferno (12-12) defeated sixth-seeded Milwaukee School of Engineering (6-11) by a final score of 5-2 Tuesday night inside Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
"I'm so proud of the entire team," said Alverno Head Coach Erin Felber. "The seniors -- Laeren and Brooke -- led the team to victory and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this weekend."
Alverno will face No. 2 Edgewood College (12-13) in a NACC semifinal dual match at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison this Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
The Inferno took two of three doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead.
Brooke McBain and Laeren Yates defeated MSOE's Carley Grant and Sammy Soeder 8-3 at No. 1, and Michelle Alexander and Lia Hutchins topped Kim Baffin and Riya Chaudhari 8-2 at No. 2. Lorinn Knoblauch and Alexandria Malicki dropped the No. 3 match 8-1.
Alexander breezed through her No. 3 match 6-0, 6-0, followed by Hutchins' 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4.
The Raiders earned one point in singles play as Baffin topped Malicki 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 to make it 4-2, but McBain clinched the team victory with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Grant at No. 1.
It was the first home contest in the NACC Tournament for Alverno, who upset Aurora University in last season's opening round as the No. 6 seed, 5-0, for the program's first-ever postseason win.
The 12th victory of the season breaks the program record most in a season which surpassed last year's 11 wins.
