GREENFIELD, Wisconsin -- Host Alverno College defeated Marian University, 6-3, in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Tuesday evening to avenge a loss to the Sabres last season.

Freshman Makayla Butler earned the dual-clinching point for the Inferno (3-5, 2-2 NACC) with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.

"Tonight's win was a great gift," said head coach Erin Felber on her 34th birthday. "It's great to come away with a team win that avenges last season's loss."

Last fall, Alverno lost 5-4 to Marian (3-3, 2-1) on the final day of the conference schedule. The loss cost the Inferno a home match in the opening round of the NACC Tournament.

However today Alverno started out strong and captured two of the three doubles matches. Asia Butler-Yeo and Brooke McBain won the No. 1 match, 8-3, and Lia Hutchins and Butler won at No. 3 with an identical 8-3 score.

McBain earned the team's third point, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while Butler-Yeo got the fourth with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 before the rookie Butler clinched the dual. Laeren Yates seized the final point for the hosts with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4.

League play continues Saturday at McKinley Park as Alverno hosts Concordia University Chicago at 2 p.m.
