MADISON, Wisconsin -- Alverno College came up a point short in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener Sunday afternoon, a 5-4 loss to perennial powerhouse Edgewood College.
The Inferno then dropped a 6-3 nonconference contest to Loras College later in the day.
Against the host Eagles (2-3, 1-0 NACC), the Inferno (1-3, 0-1 NACC) nearly came away with the lead after doubles play, but Michelle Alexander and Laeren Yates lost the tightly contested No. 2 match, 9-8, on a tiebreaker.
Butler-Yeo took No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, and Yates did the same at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3. McBain battled back from an opening set loss at No. 2 to take the final two sets and the match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Edgewood, who has won seven of the last eight conference titles, won the No. 3, 5 and 6 contests to secure the win.
Versus the Duhawks, Butler-Yeo and McBain accounted for the team's only points. The duo won their doubles match, 8-6, while Butler-Yeo won her singles match, 6-3, 6-0, and McBain won her match on a 13-11 third-set tiebreaker.
Up next is a pair of NACC home duals versus Concordia University Wisconsin and Lakeland University Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
