MILWAUKEE – The Alverno soccer team played host to the Lakeland Muskies on Saturday afternoon and battle both the Muskies and the weather conditions on the Alverno Soccer Field. After falling behind 3-0 in the first 55 minutes, the Inferno scored in the final seven minutes to break the shutout, falling by a 3-1 final.
Alverno's lone goal was the first of the season and career for sophomore Kayla Kunz, who was fed a ball from the right wing by freshman Shaye Wolfe. Kunz' shot came off the back of her heel as the goalkeeper was down in the crease to put Alverno on the board with 6:08 left in regulation.
The Inferno had a solid shot-on-goal percentage with 10 of their 14 shots coming on target. Lakeland had 11 of its 27 shots on target for the match, while the Muskies also led in corner kicks by a 10-2 margin.
Junior Shoua Vang got the first shot of the match off late in the third minute but it was wide right and off of target after breaking free from a Lakeland defender. Senior Delainey Smith put Alverno's first shot on target but was denied midway through the 12th minute.
Lakeland broke the scoreless draw at the 13:23 mark of a corner kick that was wind-aided into the goal.
Alverno nearly returned the favor with a goal off of a corner kick as freshman Ziri Hernandez-Bustos headed a corner kick that was initially taken by Wolfe.
The Muskies continued to keep the pressure up, playing with the strong gusty winds at their backs and tallied their second goal of the half at the 25:59 mark. Lakeland outshot Alverno down the stretch at an 8-2 margin, as the weather intensified with a sleety rain falling at Alverno Soccer Field.
As the intermission came, so too did the clear skies as the storm cell pushed out over Lake Michigan. The Muskies took the first two shots of the half before scoring their third goal of the contest just under 10 minutes into the second half.
Kunz was almost able to break the Lakeland scoring run as she took a flick off of a corner at the far post but was unable to bury the chance. Wolfe hit the post off of a feed from Vang, but the upright denied the chance.
As play continued into the latter stages of the second half, Alverno continued to take offensive chances, while senior Allison Weick continued to keep the Inferno within three goals.
At the 83:52 mark of the match, Kunz finally broke through as she was tied up with the Lakeland goalkeeper and a defender off of a Wolfe corner kick. The ball clicked off the back heel of Kunz and crossed the goal line for her first career goal.
The final horn sounded as the Muskies took the two-goal victory.
Weick finished the match with eight saves, while yielding the three tallies.
Alverno (4-13, 0-10 NACC) will compete in its final road match of the season on Wednesday, October 24, when the Inferno visits the Falcons of Concordia Wisconsin in Mequon at 3:30 p.m.
