FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Alverno soccer team took its final Saturday road trip of the 2018 season as the Inferno visited the Marian Sabres on Smith Field at the southern tip of Lake Winnebago.
The Inferno were able to score once as freshman Shaye Wolfe broke up the ongoing Marian shutout, as she scored her 11th goal of the season in the 81st minute of play. At the time of Wolfe's goal, Alverno was trailing 11-0 and ended up falling by the 11-1 margin.
Alverno's defensive unit held off the early Marian attack, fending off three consecutive corner kicks before a shot was stopped by senior Allison Weick late in the fourth minute of action. The defense continued to frustrate Marian as Weick continued to make stops, ending the day with 18 saves overall.
Marian finally broke through in the latter stages of the 12th minute before scoring again just 22 seconds later off an Inferno giveaway.
Wolfe notched a shot in the next offense possession but was denied by the Sabre goalkeeper. Marian scored six more goals in the opening half, including two in the final two minutes to take an 8-0 lead into the intermission.
The Sabres notched two in the opening eight minutes of the second half to take a 10-0 advantage before scoring their final goal in the 56th minute of action.
Alverno broke the Marian shutout attempt in the 81st minute as Wolfe chipped the ball over the Sabre goalkeeper to put the Inferno on the board.
Senior Delainey Smith had a chance fly over the crossbar in the 87th minute, while Wolfe took another attempt in the 89th minute with the shot being denied by the goalkeeper as Alverno fell by a 10-goal margin.
Smith ended the day with two shots, while Wolfe had three shots on the day that were all on target.
