Soccer Suffers First Setback of 2018 in Non-Conference Loss to Monmouth (Ill.)

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Alverno soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2018 season as the team fell to the Monmouth (Ill.) Fighting Scots by the score of 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Alverno's lone goal came from junior Shoua Vang, who was only able to muster the one shot for the contest. The Inferno as a team was only able to pull the trigger on four shots, with all four on target against the Monmouth goalkeeper.

In goal senior Allison Weick made four saves, but yielded the offensive outburst by Monmouth as she suffered her first loss of the season.

The Fighting Scots scored twice in the first seven minutes of action and eventually built up a 7-0 lead through the first 27 minutes of action.

Vang broke through on an unassisted effort in the 36th minute to break the shutout and put the Inferno on the board for the first time. The 7-1 score held until the halftime break just 10 minutes later.

Late in the second half Monmouth added two more goals in a six-minute span to cap off the scoring for the match at 9-1.
