MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College's 2016 season came to a close with a 3-0 loss to Aurora University Wednesday afternoon at MSOE's Viets Field.
The continuous rain overnight and into the day made Alverno Field -- a natural grass surface -- unplayable, so the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest moved to the downtown field surfaced with artificial turf.
The Spartans (8-8-2, 6-3-1 NACC) scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute via a long ball from 25 yards out. Aurora held on to the lead despite many Inferno threats in the second half, including a Jackie Vanderkolk shot that hit the far post and would have tied the contest.
AU scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to put some distance on the scoreboard and made it 3-0 with a score on a free kick in the 85th minute.
Aurora earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NACC Tournament with the win, while Alverno finishes the season with a 5-12 overall record, 1-9 in league play.
