Inferno Stung By Yellowjackets In Season Finale

MILWAUKEE -- Visiting University of Wisconsin-Superior scored a goal off a corner kick in the 82nd minute to pull ahead of host Alverno College, and held on for the 2-1 nonconference victory this afternoon at Alverno Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Inferno opened the scoring with the game's first goal, as Nava Moniriarani connected on a penalty kick for her 12th goal of the season in the 66th minute to put the host team in front, 1-0.

Nearly seven minutes later the Yellowjackets' Whitney Zagarski bombed a deep ball over Inferno goalkeeper Samantha Robinson's outstretched arms to even the game at 1-1.

UW-Superior used its 7-1 advantage on corner kicks to pull ahead, 2-1, on Shelby Coombs goal in the 82nd minute.

The Inferno had a couple of chances in the final minutes of the game -- including a free kick with seven seconds remaining in the contest, after a Yellowjacket yellow card -- but were unable to get off a clean shot for a game-tying score.

Robinson recorded 13 saves for the Inferno, while Kalea Hatlewick recorded a save for the Yellowjackets, who outshot the Inferno 28-5.

The Inferno finished the season at 6-14, while the Yellowjackets improved to 6-12.
