WAUWATOSA, Wis. -- Alverno College lost its final Northern Athletics Conference game of the season, 1-0, to host Wisconsin Lutheran College tonight at a foggy and muddy Warrior Field.
Both teams struggled keeping their footing in the opening minutes, as an all-day rain made the field as slick as an ice rink. The two teams combined for just three shots in the opening 20 minutes, and as soon as the players adjusted to the slippery field, the dense fog fell over the lights and field, which limited vision from one end of the field to the other.
The Warriors finally struck as Nicole DeSalvo scored the game's lone goal off one of the Warriors' six first-half corner kicks in the 29th minute.
The Inferno (5-13, 1-11 NAC) managed just one shot in the opening period, while the Warriors (8-7-3, 5-5-1 NAC) fired off 12 first-half shots. WLC also had a 7-2 edge in the second period, but were limited to just four on goal, due in part to the stingy Alverno defense.
Junior goalkeeper Samantha Robinson recorded 11 saves in the loss, her fourth game this season with double digits.
Alverno hits the road for a short trip again tomorrow as it takes on Mount Mary College in a nonconference game at 3:30 p.m.
