MILWAUKEE – The Alverno golf season gets underway this weekend as the Inferno will take part in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship Preview at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine.
The Inferno will be under new leadership as Brad Vanden Boogaard takes over as the program's fourth head coach since becoming a sport at Alverno College in the fall of 2013.
Vanden Boogaard inherits a roster of two returners, and adds a quartet of newcomers to the roster as the team looks to improve upon last season's seventh place finish at the 2018 NACC Championship, with a program-best score of 1,427 at the championship a season ago.
Last season Fleming participated in three events and shot a season-best 129 at the Alverno Triangular against Lakeland and Wisconsin Lutheran on September 23. Earlier in the season Fleming posted a score of 133 at the NACC Championship Preview at Meadowbrook Country Club, and posted a 138 against Mount Mary a day earlier on September 8.
Schmick participated in all of the team's events during her second season at the college and first on the team. She started the season off with a 115 in the season opener against Mount Mary; she shaved six strokes off that score a week later against Mount Mary with a season-best 109 and a +37 on the match. The NACC Championship saw the left-hander pick up a 113 in the opening round as she contributed to the team's best finish at the final match of the season.
Joining the squad this season will be a quartet of newcomers with juniors Lauren Greif, and Brittney Hondel joining the team from the softball and basketball teams respectively. Also joining the team will be senior Sam Korn, who was previously a member of the Inferno softball and volleyball teams.
Freshman newcomer Hannah Muszynski will join the team as a rookie from Union Grove High School. Muszynski has an extensive golf background as a youth player.
The season begins this Sunday at the NACC Championship Preview at 1 p.m. at Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine. The team will then compete in its lone home match of the season, when the Inferno host Mount Mary at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Golf Course in Franklin, Wisconsin.
Alverno will also take on Rockford, Edgewood and Mount Mary on the road in dual matches before competing in the NACC Championship at Meadowbrook Country Club once again. The three-day league championship will take place over the final three days of September on the 28th through the 30th.
