WEST ALLIS, Wis. – The Alverno golf team fell just one stroke shy of a tie for second place with Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday afternoon as the Inferno took third at the Alverno Triangular with the Warriors and the Lakeland Muskies.
Alverno as a team shot 475 on the day, and was +199 for the event; while Wisconsin Lutheran was just one stroke better at 474. Lakeland cruised to a 70-stroke win with a team score of 404 and was +128 for the round.
Individually Alverno was led by senior Mackenzie Mathies, who was tied for sixth with a 111 and was +42 for the event. Junior Samantha Chapnick was second for the Inferno with a 117, while Kaitlynn Schmick shot a 120. Senior Mary Kate Sulikowski was the fourth and final to count for the team score with a 127, while junior Chloe Fleming also competed and recorded a 129 through the round of 18.
Mathies got off to a slow start in the opening stages of the course but shot a bogey on the fifth to get her round going. A double-bogey on the ninth gave her a 60 through the front nine heading into the back half of the course. After going three-over on the 10th, she pared the 172-yard 11th, and then added double-bogeys on the 12th and 14th. She notched back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th before concluding her round with a pair of sixes on the last two par four holes.
Chapnick continues to improve in her first season with the team and posted a 117, including a 56 on the front nine. She picked up a double bogey on the first before collecting a single bogey on the 380-yard par four fourth hole. She notched another double on the sixth before finishing the front nine with a five on the par four ninth. The 14th saw Chapnick register a six on the par four 340-yard hole, in advance of a bogey on the 16th. She finished her round with a 61 on the back nine for an individual score of 117.
Schmick tallied double bogeys on the second and third to start her round before settling into a groove and notching a single bogey on the sixth, and two more doubles on the seventh and ninth holes for a 57 on the front half. She pared the par three 11th, before securing two more double bogeys on the round with one coming on the 13th and the other coming on the 17th as she picked up a 63 on the back nine for a total score of 120 for the round.
Sulikowski did not get her swing into form until the sixth after falling behind early with high scores on the first five holes. Sh posted a 68 on the front nine in total before turning things around on the back nine. The 172-yard 11th was a bogey for Sulikowski, followed by a double on the 389-yard 12th. She added two more doubles on the 15th and 16th before closing out her round with a nine on the 18th for a full score of 127.
Finally Fleming shot a 129 on the round, which included a 57 on the opening half of the course. She picked up a double bogey on the opening hole before tallying a single bogey on the fourth and another double on both the eighth and ninth hole. The back nine was not as friendly to Fleming, as she was only able to secure one double bogey that came on the 15th.
Alverno will close out the fall campaign this weekend at the 2018 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championships. The Inferno will head to Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine on Friday for the opening round, before the third round concludes on Sunday.
