WAUWATOSA, Wis. – It was an historic afternoon on Friday as the Alverno golf team shot a program-record score of 442 at Currie Park in a dual meet with Mount Mary. The Inferno won the match by a score of 442-530.
Alverno occupied the top three spots on the individual leaderboard as senior Mackenzie Mathies led the field with a 102 on the Par 72 course with a +30 on the afternoon.
Mathies led classmate Mary Kate Sulikowski by one stroke, while sophomore Samantha Chapnick was third with a 115 and a +43 on the day. Alverno's quartet was rounded out by Kaitlynn Schmick, who carded a 122 for fifth place overall at the event.
Mathies got her day started with a bogey on the par four first hole, and added bogeys on the third, fifth, eighth and ninth on the front half of the course. She pared a pair of holes on the back nine including the 105-yard 13th and the 171-yard par three 16th. She also added three bogeys on the back nine.
Sulikowski noted her first bogey on the longest hole of the course with a six on the par five third hole. She added another bogey on the sixth before paring the eighth and added one more bogey on the ninth as she made the turn with a three-stroke lead over Mathies. She pared both the 10th and 12th holes, before adding bogeys on the 13th, 15th, and 16th as she finished with a 53 on the back nine for a full round total of 103.
Chapnick put together a solid card as she capped off her front nine with a par on the ninth hole for a 58 on the front nine. She added a 57 on the back nince, which included a par on the 13th and a bogey on both the 15th and 16th as she notched a 115 for third place overall.
Finally Schmick fought through some tough shots on the first series of holes before nabbing a bogey at both the fifth and ninth, taking a 65 onto the back nine. She found the par-three 13th three strokes for her first par of the round before adding another on the 17th, as the only player to post a score below six on the 377-yard par four hole. She finished her round with a 122.
Mount Mary's quartet took fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth on the individual leaderboard, as the Blue Angels finished the round with a 530 (+242); falling to the Inferno by 88 strokes.
Alverno will return to action on Sunday, with the Alverno Triangular, which will feature the Inferno taking on both Lakeland and Wisconsin Lutheran at Greenfield Park Golf Course in West Allis. The opening pair is slated to tee off at 2 p.m.
