WAUWATOSA, Wis. – The Alverno golf team controlled much of the action on Saturday afternoon in a 71-stroke victory over the Mount Mary Blue Angels at Currie Park.
The par-72 course featured a distance of 5,803 yards, which did not intimidate the Inferno quartet of golfers that hit the links to kick off a busy weekend of golf. Alverno posted a team score of 498 and was a combined +210 on the weekend, as Mount Mary ended the day with a 569 and a +281 with four golfers through 18 holes.
First year golfer Kaitlynn Schmick was five strokes ahead teammate Mackenzie Mathies at the turn, and surged higher up the leaderboard with a 63-stroke stretch on the back nine to take the individual lead by 12 strokes.
Schmick started her round with a double bogey on the second and third before draining a bogey on the fifth. She pared both the eighth and ninth before heading to the back half of the course. She started the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes with double bogeys before sinking single bogeys at both the 13th and 15th, a key par on the 171-yard 16th helped her finish off a 109 for the round.
Mathies was second on the board following the conclusion of the meet carding a 121, including a 60 on the front nine. Mathies had a pair of bogeys and two double bogeys as she was just five behind Schmick at the turn for the individual lead. On the back half the senior added another two bogeys and one more double to finish her round with a 121.
Third best for both the Inferno and overall at the match was sophomore Samantha Chapnick, who posted a 130 and +58 for the day. After posting just one double bogey through the first eight holes, she added a bogey on the ninth to give her some momentum heading into the back half of the course. She bogeyed the par-three 13th before notching a par on the par-four 15th, and added another double bogey on the 16th to as she finished the back nine with a 63.
Finally for Alverno, junior Chloe Fleming made her season debut and ended the day 6th overall and just one stroke out of the top-five. Fleming had a pair of double bogeys on the front nine, and found her stroke a little more often on the back nine with another three double bogeys as she carded a 138, and was well ahead of her closest competition from Mount Mary.
The Inferno get right back to action on Sunday, when Alverno takes part in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship Preview meet at Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine, Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.
