Golf Coasts to Season Opening Win over Mount Mary on Sunday Afternoon

WEST ALLIS, Wis. – The Alverno golf team got its season off on the right foot on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 66-stroke victory over Mount Mary by a 490-556 score at Greenfield Park Golf Course.

A pair of Alverno golfers topped the leaderboard as senior Mary Kate Sulikowski and freshman Kaitlynn Schmick both shot a 115 on the afternoon. Senior Mackenzie Mathies was third for the Inferno and fourth overall as she carded a 119, while junior Samantha Chapnick finished the day sixth in the final standings with a 141.

The par 69 course featured 15 par four holes, and a trio of par three holes as the course totaled 5,636 yards on a warm and humid Wisconsin afternoon.

Sulikowski was in the second group to tee off and started the afternoon with a bogey on the initial par four first. She collected another bogey on back-to-back holes with the sixth and seventh as she registered a 60 on the initial nine holes. After the turn Sulikowski recorded two more back-to-back bogeys on the 12th and 13th before netting a par on the 271-yard 15th as she finished her round with a 115.

Schmick also carded a 115 tallying a bogey on the opening hole before adding another bogey on the eighth. In her top shot of the round Schmick registered a birdie to close out the front nine after chipping her ball out of the front edge of the sand trap and into the hole to give her a 58 through the first nine holes. On the back nine she carded two more bogeys on the par three 11th and the par four 14th as she her score ended at 115 for the day.

Mathies was paired with Schmick in the lead group and ended her round with a 119, just one stroke out of third place and four strokes off of the lead. She collected bogeys on the first, sixth, seventh, and ninth holes on the front nine as she made the turn with a two-stroke lead. She added four more bogeys on the back nine including the 11th, 14th, 16th, and 17th as she finished the back nine with a 63 to give her the 119.

Making her golf debut Chapnick had one double-bogey on the front nine as she carded a 72 on the opening half of the course. The back half featured three more double-bogeys with those coming on the 11th, 16th, and finished the 18th with a six on the par four 18th.

Alverno will once again dual with Mount Mary this weekend as the team will head to Wauwatosa for a 2 p.m. start at the Currie Park Golf Course.
