PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Alverno basketball season came to a close on Saturday evening as the Inferno dropped its final matchup of the year by the score of 86-46 to the Lakeland Muskies at Woltzen Gymnasium.
It was senior Karli Selear to lead the Inferno in scoring as she went 8-of-15 from the field and tallied a team-best 18 points, while senior Mackenzie Mathies ended her career with 11 points on the night.
With her 18 points, Selear ends her career with 809 points, as she breaks into the top-10 scoring list all-time and eclipses Kristen Speerschneider for ninth all-time by one point. Mathies caps off her career with 1,175 points, best for third on the all-time scoring list.
Senior Dani Hood capped off her four-year stint with the Inferno as she tallied one field goal for two points, while two-year senior Kendra Patterson connected on four from the floor for eight points. Senior Justice Hawkins was held to just four points, while sophomore Sara Redlin connected on one shot from beyond the arc for three points.
Patterson led the team with eight rebounds, while Selear led the team with three steals. Hood led Alverno with six assists; while Mathies and Selear were tied for second with three assists each. Selear also added the team's lone block on the night.
Alverno trailed 18-9 after the opening quarter but ran with the Muskies in the early-going of the second quarter to keep the game within 11 until a Lakeland three-pointer started a 10-5 run to close out the half and give Alverno a 20-point deficit heading into the final 20 minutes of the season.
A 19-4 run to start the third quarter propelled Lakeland to a 35-points lead with 2:30 to go in the third quarter at 64-29. Redlin knocked down a three followed by a jumper from Hood , and three-pointer by Mathies to cut back into the lead. However Lakeland connected on a last-second jumper to take the 30-point lead into the fourth.
Lakeland's lead swelled to 45 on two occasions in the final quarter, Mathies scored a layup off a pass from Hood, followed by Hood connecting on a fast-break layup. Selear made one free throw in the final 28 seconds to cap off the scoring as the Muskies won by the 86-46 margin.
Alverno concludes its season at 6-19, with a 5-win mark in conference action. The Inferno will look to revamp the senior-heavy roster heading into next season while building off of its win total this year.
Lakeland enters the NACC Tournament as the second seed, while Wisconsin Lutheran also receives a bye as the league regular season champion. Concordia Wisconsin and Dominican enter as the third and fourth seeds and will host fifth-seeded Aurora and sixth-seeded MSOE, respectively in the first round on Tuesday. The semifinals take place on Friday, while the league champion will be crowned on Saturday evening at Wisconsin Lutheran.
