Selear Nets Career-High 31, Patterson Registers Double-Double in Alverno Win vs. Marian

MILWAUKEE – Senior Karli Selear set a new career high and was one shy of the single-game program record on Tuesday evening as she registered 31 points in the Alverno basketball team's 79-75 win over Marian inside Reiman Gymnasium.

Selear's 31 points is the most since the 2013-14 season, when Jamie Hoernke tied the program record of 32, which was originally set by Emily Zawikowski during the 2001-02 season. Selear had 11 field goals in 18 attempts including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Selear also added eight assists and five rebounds.

Senior Kendra Patterson was 8-of-13 from the field, which included 16 points, which was one shy of her season-high. Patterson also led the Inferno with 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

Senior Mackenzie Mathies had 12 points on 3 field goals and added four shots from the free throw line, while adding five rebounds and two helpers. Senior Dani Hood had one three-pointer to go along with six rebounds and six assists.

Sophomore Sara Redlin had six points, which came on a pair of three-pointers, while senior Justice Hawkins returned to the court and added 11 points and four assists to go along with two steals in 26 minutes off the bench.

Marian took a 4-0 lead but Redlin got the Inferno offense kickstarted with a three-pointer off of a dish by Hood. The Sabres added to its lead with five unanswered points before Patterson knocked down a jumper to keep the Sabres close. Marian's lead expanded to six at 20-14, but Hawkins knocked down a three ball before Selear added a pair from the line to pull Alverno back within one.

Mathies followed with a three-pointer to put the Inferno up 22-20 in the final seconds of the opening quarter. Marian and Alverno played an evenly matched second quarter with the Sabres outscoring the Inferno by a 19-18 margin with 11 points coming from the hot hand of Selear.

Alverno held a one-point lead heading into the second half but Marian opened with the first bucket of the half to take a one-point lead of its own. The lead exchanged hands on the following possessions before the score was tied at 46.

Alverno took a 50-48 lead on a Selear layup before Patterson added a jumper and a Hawkins free throw to give the Inferno a five-point lead. The Inferno were outscored 4-1 in the closing minutes but held a 54-51 lead into the fourth period.

Selear got the scoring started in the fourth quarter quickly and added the and-one free throw to make the score 57-51. Hood connected on a three-pointer with 8:18 to go to put the Inferno up by nine at 62-53 lead but the Sabres refused to go down quietly.

The Sabres had trimmed the lead to 73-71 with two minutes left in the game, but Hawkins connected on a clutch layup to put Alverno up by two possessions. Selear added one free throw before a Marian layup pulled the Sabres back within three. Mathies added a free throw before Marian added a layup with 20 second left.

Mathies was fouled and added two from the free throw line to ice the game and give the Inferno a four-point victory.

Alverno (5-16, 4-12 NACC) will host Illinois Tech on Thursday evening for a 7 p.m. start against the Scarlet Hawks from Reiman Gymnasium looking to win its second consecutive game.
