AURORA, Ill. – The Alverno basketball team kicked off the final month of its 2018-19 season on Saturday afternoon, as the team took its final trip to the Chicagoland area this season and falling to the host Aurora Spartans by an 85-50 score.
Three players reached double figures for the Inferno, led by sophomore Sara Redlin, who tallied a career-best 16 points on five field goals, including four from beyond the arc. Redlin also led the team with six rebounds on the game.
Senior Mackenzie Mathies had 15 points on the game, with four field goals all coming from three-point land, while she also converted on 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Senior Karli Selear added another 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers, as Selear was 4-of-9 from the field on the afternoon.Senior Dani Hood made the start and led Alverno with six assists and a pair of steals on the afternoon, she also made a pair from the free throw line for her two points.
Sophomore Brittney Hondel rounded out the starting lineup and pulled down six rebounds to tie for the team lead while also making one field goal attempt.
In reserve, sophomore Kailey Kennow had one rebounds and connected on one shot for two points, while sophomore Brandi Rice converted on her first collegiate basket for the first two points of her career.
Alverno started out slow in the opening quarter but came alive later in the period. Aurora opened up with the game's first eight points before Redlin knocked down her first three-pointer at the 7:27 mark. The Spartans connected on the next shot before Mathies drilled a three-ball to pull Alverno within four. After another Aurora basket it was Selear with a jumper of her own off a feed from Hood.
With Alverno trailing by eight at 17-9, the Inferno closed out the period on a hot stretch beginning with Mathies' second three-pointer of the quarter followed by a Selear free throw. After a costly Aurora turnover late in the period, Mathies connected on a three-pointer to beat the buzzer as the Inferno went into the second quarter trailing by one at 17-16.
Alverno took the lead with a Redlin layup to open the second quarter, followed by an Aurora layup and Kennow jumper to give the Inferno a two-point lead at the 9:17 mark. However, an 11-3 run by the Spartans put Alverno down by six. Selear answered with a layup before the Inferno got another defensive board and Redlin knocked down a jumper to pull the Inferno back within one at 29-28. A 13-1 run late by the home team put the score at 42-29 heading into halftime.
The Inferno got off to another quick start as Selear made a layup followed by a the and-one free throw to make it a 10-point game, but it was the home team to spurt off nine unanswered to give Aurora the 19-point advantage. Aurora outscored the Inferno 22-10 in the third quarter and 21-11 in the fourth to runaway late with the game by an 85-50 score.
Alverno (4-16, 3-12 NACC) will return home for its final three games of the season beginning with Marian on Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. start against the Sabres inside Reiman Gymnasium.
