DUBUQUE, Iowa – Following her two-game performance at the 2018 Loras Christmas Classic, Alverno senior Mackenzie Mathies was selected to the All-Tournament team as selected by the four coaches at the event.
Mathies played well for the Inferno over the two-game, two-day classic as she averaged 20.5 points per game including 24 points in the team's second matchup against Simpson on the 29th of December.
She opened the weekend with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting including three three-pointers as she also ripped down four rebounds and added two assists and two steals against host Loras. The following day she totaled 24 points, which was her second highest point total of the fall semester behind her team-leading 27-point effort at Marian on December 15. Eighteen of Mathies' 24 points against Simpson came via the three-point shot as she was 8-of-12 from the field overall, while also adding a team-best seven rebounds in the matchup.
On the season Mathies leads the team with 17.0 points per game through the team's first dozen games on the year. She has 204 points on the year and has connected on 72 field goals while shooting 38.3 percent from the field. She also has nearly half of the team's 71 three-pointers made with 34 on the year and is also amongst the team leaders from the charity stripe averaging 66.7% from the line.
Mathies is currently tied for second on the team with 62 rebounds and is second on the team with 47 defensive boards. She is also second on the team with 14 steals and third on the squad with two blocks to go along with her 10 assists as she leads the team with 467 minutes played this season.
She is having a career year from the field at 38.3 percent this season, eclipsing her previous career high of 35.2% from the field as a freshman. She already has matched her freshman season total with 204 points, and is on pace to eclipse her career-record 327 points as a junior. For her career, Mathies has totaled 998 points and will look to become the fourth player in program history to reach the millennium mark in an Inferno uniform.
Mathies and the Inferno will get right back to conference action on Tuesday evening, when the team visits Edgewood in Madison for a 7 p.m. start against the Eagles.
