MILWAUKEE – In a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest the Alverno basketball team fell to the Lakeland Muskies by the score of 65-46 inside Reiman Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
Leading the way for the Inferno was senior Kendra Patterson, who tallied a season-best 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Senior Mackenzie Mathies recorded eight points including a team-best two three-pointers in the second half. With her eight points, Mathies is now just two points shy of becoming the fourth player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
Senior Karli Selear recorded six points, while three players notched four points apiece including senior Justice Hawkins, and sophomores Kailey Kennow and Sara Redlin. Senior Dani Hood rounded out the scoring with three points.
Kennow had a team-high eight rebounds on the night, while Patterson was one off the pace with seven caroms on the game. Hawkins tallied five boards, while Selear and Hood each had four. Hawkins led the team with five assists, with Selear second on the team with four helpers.
Lakeland opened the scoring with a layup, but Patterson answered to open the scoring for the Inferno. The Muskies drilled a three-pointer followed by another mid-range jumper from Patterson. Alverno took the lead at 8-7 following a Hawkins jumper at the 5:51 mark of the opening quarter.
The rest of the period was pretty close until the final few minutes as Lakeland connected on a three-pointer to take a 16-10 lead. After Lakeland took a 20-12 lead the Inferno sank one free throw late to close the scoring in the first 10 minutes at 20-13 in favor of the guest.
The second quarter was evenly matched with Lakeland outscoring Alverno by just a bucket at 15-13. Selear opened the quarter with a jumper, while Kennow and Patterson also converted field goals. Patterson also made a pair from the stripe, and following a basket by Selear, Patterson closed out the period with three points for the Inferno.
The score in the third matched the score in the second as it was the Muskies to win the quarter by a 15-13 margin. Alverno got a period-best four points by Redlin, while Mathies connected on a three-pointer, while Patterson and Hawkins each had two points. Selear and Hood each had a free throw apiece to round out the scoring.
Alverno was able to score seven points in the final quarter, led by Mathies who tallied five points including one three-pointer to go along with a pair of free throws. Patterson closed out the scoring with a basket and also added a steal late in the game to cap off her 17-point effort.
Alverno (3-9, 2-5 NACC) will head on the road this Tuesday to take on Edgewood from the Edgedome in Madison for a 7 p.m.
