Selear Nets 17, Kennow adds 11 in Home Conference Game with Benedictine

MILWAUKEE – The Alverno basketball team rang in the New Year at Reiman Gymnasium on Wednesday evening, as the Inferno hosted the Benedictine Eagles. Ultimately it was the Eagles coming out on top by a 77-52 score.

Two players reached double figures for the Inferno as it was senior Karli Selear to lead the team in scoring with 17 points, including a team-best two three-pointers. Sophomore Kailey Kennow notched 11 points in the loss on 4-of-8 shooting as she also led the team with seven rebounds.

Connecting on a pair from beyond the arc was sophomore Sara Redlin, who finished the night with six points. Senior Mackenzie Mathies had eight points and added a pair of steals, while it was senior Justice Hawkins to lead the way for the Inferno with four steals as she also added five points.

Senior Dani Hood had five points including one three-pointer of her two attempts from beyond the arc. Senior Kendra Patterson had one assist on the night as well.

Benedictine started off the night with the first eight points before Mathies got the Inferno started with a pair from the stripe. After a made shot by Benedictine, the Inferno got a basket and later on a free throw from Kennow to trim the Eagle lead in half at 10-5. The Eagles took a 15-7 lead into the first break of the game.

In a higher-scoring second quarter the Inferno opened up the stanza as Redlin knocked down a three-pointer, and later Selear connected on another three-pointer to pull the Inferno within one possession at the 6:46 mark. With Benedictine leading by four at 25-21, the Eagles drained a three-pointer with 3:29 left in the half but Hood responded quickly with a three-pointer of her own on the next possession.

The Inferno entered the third quarter down by seven at 33-26, but the Eagles opened the second half on a 10-2 run to propel Benedictine ahead by a 43-28 advantage. Kennow sank a layup, and Mathies connected on a three-pointer late in the period but the Eagles continued to pull away in the quarter and led 57-39 heading into the fourth.

Benedictine added 20 more points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Inferno by seven as the Eagles emerged victorious by a 77-52 score.

Alverno (3-8, 2-4 NACC) will be back home on Saturday evening, when the Inferno host the Lakeland Muskies for a 7 p.m. conference tip-off inside the Reiman Gymnasium.
