DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Alverno basketball team got back to action on Friday evening in its opener at the Loras Christmas Classic on Lillis Court. The Inferno fell to the host Loras Duhawks by the score of 99-47.
Alverno shot 30.4% from the field against the high-octane Duhawk offense, which shot nearly 50% from the field. Leading the way on offense for the Inferno was senior Mackenzie Mathies, who tallied 17 points on the night including a team-best three three-pointers.
Senior Kendra Patterson was second on the team with nine points, while classmates Dani Hood and Karli Selear each had seven points on the night. Sophomore Sara Redlin connected on a three-ball for her point total, while both senior Justice Hawkins and sophomore Kailey Kennow each added two points apiece.
The Inferno got hot to open the game as Hawkins opened the scoring off a dish from Selear, followed by a three-pointer from Mathies off a Hood pass. The 5-0 advantage dissipated into a 5-5 tie, but the Inferno answered right back as Hood drilled a three-pointer to put the Inferno back up by three with just over three minutes gone by.
Loras took its first lead at 9-8, before the Inferno answered as Hawkins led Mathies into the lane for a layup to put Alverno up 10-9. The Inferno kept the score even at 12 before Loras closed out the opening stanza on an 11-3 run to take a 23-15 lead into the second quarter.
Both sides exchanged early baskets in the beginning stages of the second quarter with Alverno's points coming from Mathies and Patterson. The Duhawks went on a 21-2 rally to put distance on the scoreboard to take a 49-23 advantage. Mathies converted on a jumper in the final 35 seconds to close out the first half scoring with the Inferno trailing by 24.
Loras opened the second half on a 14-0 run and took a 78-33 lead in the final 10 minutes, where the Duhawks closed out the game with a 21-14 difference in the fourth quarter to emerge victorious at 99-47.
Alverno (3-6, 2-3 NACC) will close out the 2018 calendar year tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip against Simpson. The game will be the second and final contest for the Inferno at the Loras Christmas Classic; earlier in the day the Simpson knocked off Elmhurst by a 92-57 score.
