FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Alverno basketball team picked up its second conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Inferno knocked off the Marian Sabres by the score of 76-50 at the Sadoff Gymnasium.
With the victory the Inferno improve to 3-4 overall on the season with a 2-2 mark in league matchups heading into the final conference game of the 2018 half of the season on Tuesday afternoon at home against Aurora.
Alverno had its best shooting day of the season at 50.9% from he field to go along with a season-best 37.5% from beyond the arc. For the second consecutive game and for the third time this season Alverno amassed at least 40 rebounds, totaling 41 boards while also totaling a season-best 22 assists on the year.
Individually the Inferno were led by senior Mackenzie Mathies, who tallied a season-best 27 points as she shot 11-of-22 from the field with a team-best three three-pointers on the matchup. Mathies also recorded a doubld-double as she picked up a team-high 11 rebounds with nine coming on the defensive glass.
Also picking up a double-double was senior Justice Hawkins, who picked up 15 points and added 10 assists on the game. Senior Karli Selear picked up 10 points on the game, with nine of those points coming in the second half. Senior Dani Hood had seven points and added six rebounds, while also connecting on her lone three-point attempt on the game.
Despite battling foul trouble throughout the game, senior Kendra Patterson notched eight points and five boards as she played just 18 minutes on the game. Sophomore Kailey Kennow had eight rebounds, and added three points, while sophomore Sara Redlin had six points, all coming in the second half.
Alverno fell behind 5-4 in the early minutes of the game before Hawkins knocked down a jumper just under two minutes into the game. Mathies followed with a layup and Patterson connected on a jumper to give the Inferno a seven-point advantage. Mathies followed with back-to-back three pointers, and Patterson made another jumper to give Alverno a 20-5 lead with 3:43 left in the opening quarter.
The remainder of the first half did not go as smoothly for the Inferno as Marian outscored the Inferno 28-19 in the final 13:22 of the first half. Despite being outscored, Alverno held a 39-33 lead at the break.
Through the final 20 minutes of the game Alverno controlled much of the play despite being outnumbered by a deep Sabre bench.
Mathies got the scoring started in the third quarter with a layup followed by a Patterson jumper to give the Inferno a 10-point lead once again. Later in the period Hawkins connected on a layup, then added a free throw, before Selear connected on a pair from the stripe to put Alverno ahead by 15. Redlin drilled a three-pointer with 1:49 left in the third to give the Inferno an 18-point advantage.
Alverno led 58-42 heading into the final quarter as Mathies opened the scoring with a layup, before Hawkins made a layup and Selear connected on a three-pointer. The Inferno continued its hot shooting with a pair of jumpers by both Mathies and Patterson to take a 22-point lead with 4:37 left in the game.
Later in the stanza, Hawkins gave Alverno a 23-point advantage at 73-50 with another layup, before Redlin capped off the scoring for Alverno with a layup before adding a late free throw to give the Inferno the 26-point win.
Alverno (3-4, 2-2 NACC) will return home on Tuesday for its final home game of 2018 as the Inferno welcome in the Aurora Spartans for a 7 p.m. start from Reiman Gymnasium.
