Inferno Tripped Up in Non-Conference Road Matchup at Maranatha

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Alverno basketball team took on non-conference Maranatha Baptist on Monday evening at the MBU Gymnasium. The Inferno ended up falling in the contest by a 60-45 score.

Leading the way for the Inferno was senior Mackenzie Mathies who had a team-best 17 points on the night including nine in the final quarter of play. Senior Justice Hawkins and sophomore Kailey Kennow were tied for second in scoring with nine points apiece on the evening.

Senior Karli Selear had five points, while classmate Dani Hood added four on the contest. Selear and Hood also led the team with four assists each. Hood also led the team with eight rebounds, while classmate Kendra Patterson was second on the team with seven caroms on the night.

The game began with Maranatha building up a 10-0 lead before Mathies connected on a three-pointer off a dish from Hood. Hawkins made a layup to cut the lead in half with 4:11 left in the opening quarter. After a pair of baskets by the Sabercats gave the home team a 14-5 lead, Kennow connected on a free throw to shrink the lead to eight.

Alverno trailed 19-8 heading into the second quarter and got kickstarted by a three-ball from Mathies. Kennow knocked down a jumper followed by a jump shot by Maranatha. Hawkins followed with a three pointer before Kennow knocked down another three to pull the Inferno back within two. Kennow went 1-for-2 on the line to get back within one before Hood connected on a jumper to give the Inferno a 22-21 advantage.

Hawkins followed with a layup to give Alverno its largest lead of the game at three with 3:08 left in the half at 24-21. Maranatha closed out the half on an 8-4 run to take a one-point lead into the break at 29-28.

The Sabercats scored the first six points of the second half before Hood put an end to the run with a layup at the 4:28 mark of the quarter. Maranatha netted another seven points to open a 12-point lead before Hawkins sank a layup off a pass from Hood to shrink the deficit to 10 heading into the final quarter.

Maranatha connected on the first five points of the fourth quarter as the lead swelled to 15 before Selear went 2-for-2 at the stripe just 2:35 into the period. After Maranatha scored a pair from the line, Mathies stepped back for a three-ball before converting another to get the deficit back under 10 points. The Sabercats collected two free throws before Mathies drilled another three-pointer with 4:09 to go in regulation.

After nearly three minutes of scoreless basketball the Sabercats scored four from the charity stripe to open up a 12-point lead once again with 64 second left in the game. Selear added one free throw late, as did sophomore Sara Redlin to cap off the scoring as the Sabercats came up with the 15-point win at 60-45.

Alverno (2-4, 1-2 NACC) will return to league play on Saturday, as the Inferno visit the Marian Sabres in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for a 2 p.m. start at the Sadoff Gymnasium.
