MILWAUKEE – The Alverno basketball team fell to league-favorite Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday evening inside Reiman Gymnasium by the score of 76-57.
Leading the way for the Inferno was senior Kendra Patterson, who tallied a team-best 15 points while also amassing a team-best five assists and two steals on the evening against the Warriors.
Senior Mackenzie Mathies had 13 points on the night, which included one of Alverno's four three-pointers on the night. Mathies also added three defensive rebounds in he effort. Also reaching double-figures in points was sophomore Kailey Kennow, who notched 10 on the evening including a team-best two three-pointers.
Registered a team-best nine rebounds, including five offensive caroms, was senior Dani Hood, who tallied all seven of her points from the free-throw line. Senior Karli Selear added eight points including one three-pointer on her lone attempt from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Sara Redlin also pulled down three defensive rebounds and added a steal in 24 minutes in the conference matchup.
Wisconsin Lutheran opened up a 4-0 lead to start the game before Patterson laid the ball in for the first Inferno basket of the night. The Warriors increased their lead to 10 at 18-8 with 2:26 to go in the opening stanza.
Alverno went 4-for-4 down the stretch of the quarter as Hood and Selear each connected on a pair of free throws, with a Warrior three-pointer sandwiched in between as Wisconsin Lutheran led 21-11 heading into the second quarter.
Both sides exchanged a pair of layups to open the second before a 14-2 run by the Warriors gave the guests a 22-point lead at 39-17. Kennow put an end to the run with her first of two three-pointers before Wisconsin Lutheran closed out the quarter on a five-point run.
The Inferno got the scoring started in the second half as Mathies connected on a pair of free throws to trim the lead in half at 44-22 with 41 seconds gone by. Wisconsin Lutheran then increased its lead to 52-24 on a three-pointer with 8:05 left in the third quarter.
Mathies connected on a jumper followed by a jumper from Patterson and then another layup by Mathies to make the score 52-30. Hood added two more from the stripe, followed by two at the line from Patterson to give the Inferno a 10-0 run. Wisconsin Lutheran closed out the third quarter on a 12-6 rally to take a 64-40 lead in the final 10 minutes of play.
In the fourth quarter it was once again Mathies to open the scoring with a jumper just 24 seconds into the quarter. Wisconsin Lutheran continued to add to its lead before ultimately taking a 30-point lead.
With 3:49 left in regulation Mathies connected on a three-pointer, followed by a three-ball by Selear. Kennow made it three consecutive three-pointers for the Inferno before Patterson connected on a layup in the closing seconds to give Alverno an 11-0 run to close out the game.
As a team Alverno shot 38% from the field while finishing at 26.7% from beyond the arc. The team also shot a season-best 83.3% from the charity stripe.
Alverno (2-3, 1-2 NACC) will take on non-conference Maranatha Baptist at 7 p.m. on Monday before heading back into conference play next Saturday at Marian.
