MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Alverno College basketball suffered a loss to Lakeland University on the final day of the 2017-18 season by a final score of 84-52.
The Muskies jumped to a quick 10-4 lead to start the first quarter. Gabby Hood contributed to the Inferno scoring with a made jump shot. At the 2:13 mark, Dani Hood made a layup to cut the Muskie advantage to 13-8. A layup from Gabby Hood shrunk the Muskie lead to 15-12. Lakeland controlled a 15-12 margin heading to the second quarter.
Lakeland started the quarter with a 7-0 run until Gabby Hood made a jump shot. At the 3:17 mark, Gabby Hood cut the Muskie lead to nine. Heading to the intermission break, Lakeland held a 37-20 advantage.
The Muskies continued to gain momentum with a 9-2 run. Mackenzie Mathies hit a three point field goal to help the Inferno scoring effort. After an Inferno timeout, Gabby Hood made a layup with 2:46 left in the quarter. Going to the final quarter of the season, Lakeland controlled a 60-32 margin.
Another 13-2 run for the Muskies to start the quarter extended the lead for Lakeland. Alverno College held the Muskies to two points the final two minutes of regulation. The large lead for Lakeland was enough to take the victory by a score of 82-52.
Senior Gabby Hood led the Inferno in scoring finishing her career with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. Dani Hood chipped in with 13 points while Melissa Weyand grabbed five rebounds. The Inferno shot an impressive 15-16 from the charity stripe.
Junior Mackenzie Mathies finished the season breaking the record for single season three point field goals made with 62. Mathies collected 15 points to contribute to the Inferno scoring.
"I love these kids, they are fantastic. We are definitely going to miss our seniors," Said Head Coach Jessica Ott.
The contest was the final game of the 2017-18 season. The Inferno finished 5-20 (2-18 NACC).
