MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Alverno College (5-18, 2-16 NACC) fell to crosstown rival Wisconsin Lutheran by a score of 92-63.
Both teams started the contest trading basket for basket. The Warriors recorded back-to-back layups to take a small 11-4 lead. Mackenzie Mathies shrunk the Wisconsin Lutheran effort to 11-9. Wisconsin Lutheran responded with a trio of three point field goals to extend the Warrior advantage to 22-9. A final layup with 29 seconds left saw Wisconsin Lutheran control a 24-11 effort into the second quarter.
The Warriors continued to connect from beyond the three point line to open the quarter with a 30-11 margin. At the 3:40 mark Gabby Hood connected on a layup to cut the Warrior lead to 38-19. Heading to the intermission break Wisconsin Lutheran held a 50-22 effort.
Alverno continued to chip away at the Warrior lead with three layups. Mackenzie Mathies again converted on a three point field goal to knot the game at 63-45. At the 1:35 mark, Gabby Hood tallied a layup to give the Warriors a 71-39 effort. Alverno found themselves trailing heading to the final quarter 75-41.
The Inferno continued to cut at the Warrior lead to start the quarter. Dani Hood helped the Alverno effort to 80-49 with 6:06 left in regulation. Back-to-back layups from Kendra Patterson and Andrea Binkley shrunk the Warrior lead to 83-53. Wisconsin Lutheran went on to take the NACC victory 92-63.
Junior Mackenzie Mathies led the way for the Inferno in scoring finishing with 23 points. Senior Gabby Hood collected 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kendra Patterson added 16 points and five rebounds to the Inferno effort.
Alverno College returns to Reiman Gymnasium for the final two games of the season. The Inferno welcome MSOE on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
