Slow Start Sinks Inferno

 MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Alverno College basketball (5-17, 2-15 NACC) fell in NACC competition to Aurora University on Wednesday evening by a final score of 87-62.

The Spartans started the contest with 12 unanswered points forcing an Inferno timeout. Karli Selear got the scoring going for Alverno with back-to-back three point field goals. Kendra Patterson connected on jump shot to cut the Spartan lead to 24-12. Aurora sank a three point shot just before the buzzer to control a 27-12 advantage.

Aurora continued the momentum in the second quarter with a 18-0 run. Alverno began to shrink the Aurora lead with two three point field goals from Kendra Patterson and Karli Selear. Another three point shot from Patterson just before the buzzer saw the Inferno head into halftime trailing 49-26.

Alverno College continued to slowly chip away at the Aurora effort. Mackenzie Mathies hit a three pointer to slice the Spartan lead to 55-31. At the 1:32 mark, Gabby Hood converted on a layup to give Aurora a 62-40 advantage. Heading to the final quarter, Aurora controlled a 66-42 point margin.

The Inferno continued to fight in the final quarter as Kendra Patterson hit another three point field goal. Two layups from Dani Hood and Kendra Patterson shrank the Aurora lead to 23 with 1:55 left in regulation. Aurora took the NACC victory by a final score of 87-62.

Junior Kendra Patterson came off the bench to lead the Inferno in scoring with 22 points. Karli Selear added 17 points and four rebounds.

Senior Gabby Hood collected five assists. The native from Racine, Wis. now stands as the new career leader for assists. She Finished the contest with eight points and nine rebounds.

Alverno College travels across town to face Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.
