Shooting Woes Sink Inferno

MILWAUKEE, WIS.-Alverno College (5-15, 2-13 NACC) battled through three quarters against Dominican but the Stars took the victory by a score of 56-47.

Both teams started the contest trading basket for basket with Alverno taking a 10-9 advantage with 3:38 left in the quarter. The back and forth affair continued as the first quarter ended at 13 apiece.

The close play continued through the second quarter with the Stars taking a slim 15-14 lead at the 8:48 mark. The Inferno took back the lead off a three point play from Karli Selear. A layup from Dani Hood put the Alverno effort back to three with 3:29 left until halftime. A Dominican jump shot just before the intermission break saw the Stars ahead 26-23.

Dominican started the third quarter with a layup to extend their lead to 28-23. The Inferno scored nine unanswered points to claim a 32-28 advantage. The Stars connected with eleven straight points until an Inferno jump shot with 30 seconds left to cut the Dominican lead to 41-34.

The Stars started the quarter with a 5-0 run until a layup from Gabby Hood cut the Dominican effort to 46-40. After an Inferno timeout, another 6-0 run for the Stars extended the Dominican lead to ten with 5:31 left in regulation. Dominican hit their free throws to close out the quarter and take the victory 56-47.

Offensively the Inferno scoring was led by junior Karli Selear who collected 15 points and five rebounds. Junior Dani Hood nearly missed a double-double finishing with a career-high 11 points and nine rebounds. Mackenzie Mathies chipped in with 13 points.

Senior Gabby Hood grabbed her 500th career rebound finishing the contest with 10 rebounds. The native from Racine, Wis. currently sits at 4th all-time for career rebounds.

"Gabby does a lot of great things for us. It is outstanding to get 500 career rebounds," Said Head Coach Jessica Ott.

Alverno College continues their home stand as they welcome Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
