PLYMOUTH WIS.—Alverno College basketball (5-13, 2-11 NACC) were unable to complete the comeback attempt as they fell in NACC action to Lakeland University 72-58.
The Muskies started the contest with a 6-2 advantage. Gabby Hood connected on a jump shot to cut the Lakeland lead to 6-4. Lakeland strung together a quick 6-0 run to force an Inferno timeout. The Muskies held a 20-8 effort into the second quarter.
Lakeland added to their lead with a 6-0 run until Gabby Hood converted on a three point field goal. Kendra Patterson hit a jump shot to knot the game at 28-16 with 3:26 left until halftime. Lakeland controlled a 35-23 lead into the intermission break.
Alverno started the third quarter of play with an 8-0 run. A layup and free throw from Dani Hood saw the Muskie lead shrink to 13 with 2:22 left in the quarter. A five point swing just before the one minute mark slashed the Lakeland advantage to eight. Heading to the final quarter of play the Muskies held a slim four point lead.
With momentum on their side Alverno continued to chip away at the Muskie lead. Dani Hood connected on a jump shot to tie the game at 51 forcing a Lakeland timeout. At the 5:58 mark, a Muskie jump shot extended the Lakeland effort to 61-52. The Muskies took the victory by a final score of 72-58.
Senior Gabby Hood led the Inferno scoring as she tallied 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Kendra Patterson came off the bench to collect 14 points while Mackenzie Mathies and Karli Selear both added nine points.
Alverno College returns to Reiman Gymnasium as they face Dominican University on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
