MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Alverno College basketball (5-12, 2-10) fought hard to Edgewood College but fell by a final score of 79-65.
The Eagles started the contest with a quick 8-0 run before Dani Hood converted on a layup. After the Eagles jumped to a 13-3 advantage, Gabby Hood continued the Inferno scoring off a layup. With 38 seconds left in the quarter, Edgewood added to their lead off a steal and layup. The Eagles controlled a 16-7 effort going into the second quarter.
Alverno picked up the momentum to start the quarter tallying four straight layups to cut the Eagle lead to 19-15. After both teams traded basket for basket, Karli Selear hit a three pointer to cut the Edgewood advantage to one with 38 seconds left. Gabby Hood hit a buzzer beating three pointer to give Alverno a 31-29 lead heading to the intermission break.
The third quarter picked up where the previous quarter left off with Gabby Hood connecting on a layup to extend the Inferno lead to 35-33. An Eagle layup cut the Inferno advantage to one with 6:18 left in the quarter. Edgewood reclaimed the lead at the 4:06 mark. After an Alverno timeout, the Eagles connected on a three point field goal to widen the gap to 46-38. Heading to the final quarter, Edgewood held the lead at 54-43.
Edgewood continued to add to their lead in the quarter holding a 13 point margin at one point. Five straight points from Kendra Patterson cut the Eagle lead to 10 with 5:40 left in the contest. A final Eagle jumpshot at the 1:00 mark sealed the victory for Edgewood 79-65.
The Inferno scoring was led by junior Karli Selear who tallied 21 points and four steals. Senior Gabby Hood added 18 points, five steals and four assists. Kendra Patterson came off the bench to add 10 points to the Inferno effort.
Alverno College returns to Reiman Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 24 against Benedictine at 7 p.m.
